about

Birds over Ukraine is the debut album from electronic artist godot.112358 released on fr33zehead records.

The album employs VCV Rack a digital modular synthesis platform to explore generative music and live electronic performance. Godot.112358 builds electronic systems to create dense and evolving sound scapes then intuitively adapts these interrelated systems and records the output.

The compositions are the result of an abstract dialogue between the machine of the modular synthesiser and the composer, if the machine was left to its own devices it would continue to conjure new sonic permutations and new compositional choices, but any subtle or extreme intervention by the composer leads to radically different results. Through these interactions a continuum of disconnection and connection from the compositional process is explored, some compositions are the result of minimal intervention with the generative process while others are brutally manipulated by the composer.

This compositional idea of disconnection and connection through our interactions with technology is further explored conceptually through the song titles, album title and artwork

The song titles give reference to the events during the ongoing Ukraine and Russian war, while the album title provides the sense of flying above events that are unfolding below. As birds fly they are voyeurs of the events below them, disconnected from the atrocities of war they fly above. Birds flying is symbolic of the composers reaction to watching the Ukraine war, as a voyeur disconnected from the atrocities of the invasion while viewing events through TV news. Again the continuum of disconnection and connection is explored and how technology simultaneously removes us or disconnects us from atrocities while also connecting us to them by providing seemingly unlimited digital information on events.

The album art work is an image of the solar eclipse captured in 1919, this image is historically important because it proved Einstein’s theory of general relativity. The image was the beginning of a new scientific aeon and the beginning of the atomic age since Einsteins equations would be weaponised with the invention of the nuclear warhead. The art work implies how one seemly disconnected event can lead to radically new outcomes in the interconnected systems they are related with.

How to once again reestablish connection us with others and events from distant places is something that needs to be addressed continually as new technology and new atrocities emerge on the horizon.

As the moon blocks the sun during a solar eclipse we are momentarily disconnected from its light, that darkness needs to be a moment of reflection on how we reconnect to the light once the sun emerges anew.
